A partial list of things we've found useful at festivals
Living Space
- Check Tire Air Your vehicle and trailer, check before you leave, 5 lbs of air pressure can save you up to 3 miles per gallon!
- Tent and Tent Bag - Set it up at least once before taking it out. It's never as easy as it looks.
- Extra Tarps-
- Spare Stakes - We really like the tough plastic "Power Pegs" available most places that sell camping gear
- Hammer
- Tent Repair Kit and Seam Sealer
- Pole Bag
- Broom or Whisk Broom - Being able to clean your floor and feet will make you amazingly happy. It saves wear and tear on the tent too.
- Sleeping Bags and Storage Bag
- Pillow and Extra Blankets
- Cot or Air Mattress
- Air Pump or Electric Blower - for your air mattress
- Space Blanket - One of our attendees pointed out that occasionally we get a chilly night. If you sleep on the ground ,even inside your tent, a space blanket under your sleeping bag makes a phenomenal difference.
Cooking Equipment
- Ziplock Bags - We put everything in Ziplock bags (the One Gallon size is perfect for clothing) The bags are generally re-usable. And when it rains, you just can't imagine how cool it is to have dry socks. We will touch on this a lot. It seems that every really bad experience we've had at a festival included being cold and wet. There is a new kind out with a sliding zipper that is just perfect for camping
- Gatorade or equivalent - Dehydration is a major problem at Festivals. You just forget to drink. Gatorade is usually available at the first aid tent, but you should have it on hand even so.
- Cook kits - plates, pots, pans, bowls, Cooking and eating utensils
- Pot Holder or Oven Mitt
- Pot scrubber and biodegradable soap
- Garbage bags and ties - Biodegradable and recycled, please.
- Ice chest and ice packs
- Cups
- Coffee pot (call it a tea pot, if you like.)
Clothing
- Ritual Robes and Tools
- Warm Weather and Cold Weather Clothing - Every event in all parts of the world has the potential for almost any kind of weather. We attended a PSG one year in Wisconsin (late June) where the temp dropped below freezing. Two days later it was 105. Pack for the expected, but a back up is worth it.
- Rain gear - We like those rain ponchos that are available at K-mart or Walmart for around $10.00
- Boots - One for each foot
- Socks and sock liners
- Good pair of gloves
- Hat - Wide Brim for sun protection, Knit for warmth.
- Sunglasses
Festival Items
- Instrument of Torture - A Drum, Rattle, Guitar, tamboreen, whatever. Fire Drumming, and Bardic Circle are always fun, all the more so if you can join in the noise
- Flashlight - Check Batteries before you need it!
- Lantern - Fuel, Stand, and Carrying case
- Extra pair of shoes - Keep in ziplock bags! Make sure the extra pair fits you.
- Sunscreen
- Bug repellent
- Biodegradable soap / shampoo
- Towels / wash cloths - Your towel is your best friend, ask Douglass Adams.
- Chem-lights - they are waterproof, and great in an emergency
- Water carrier - There is a folding 5 gal water bag that is very nice
- Tire inflator-portable air compressor
- Moist disposable Towelettes or Baby Wipes handy for wiping w/c seats, or quick clean up of hands, feet, face, whatever.
Emergency Items
- Plastic whistle
- Change for emergency phone calls
- Bring your Prescription Medication - It amazing how many people forget this little item. It's your health, keep it well. Once you are on site, it's probably a good idea to make the medical coordinator aware of your health requirements, and with many festivals, it's mandatory.
- A Fire Extinguisher - Especially if you use candles or other open flame source in your camping area
- First Aid Kit
- Ziplock bags
- Space blanket
- Knife - The blade should be 3" or longer, and of quality steel
- Compass - Like the knife, you get what you pay for. Liquid-filled is good, oil-filled is best.
- Rope - We recommend at least 50' with a 500# test. Parachute cord or "Shock Line" are very good choices.
- Binoculars
- Camera and Film - Depending on the Festival. Many Festivals don't allow photography or videography
- Sewing kit
- Duct Tape - It holds the universe together
- Extra food - We recommend freeze-dried foods for this purpose
- Moisture producing candies
- Candles - If you also have waterproof matches, you'll have a light when you need it.
